The Liberal Democrats may have committed political suicide by agreeing to join a coalition government with the Conservatives without securing an agreement to move to real proportional representation.
The Lib Dems were holding a once only card by allowing the conservatives to enter power and needed to ensure that there future was secure by establishing that they would never again have to face a direct vote against Labour and the Conservatives.
Regardless of the outcome of the next 5 years, come the next election the Liberal Democrats will face an impossible election challenge under any system in which the number of seats they get are not directly proportional to share of vote they get.
The reason is simple they will be synonymous with the Conservatives.
The Labour party will discredit them by saying a vote for Lib Dem is a vote for the Conservatives this will reduce the Liberals overall share. In anything other than direct proportional representation that would result in the number of Lib Dem being reduced.
If the alliance is successful the Conservatives will say why not give the conservatives a full mandate because they have proven themselves successful. They will also point out that the Lib Dems are inseparably linked to their policy and any deviation or challenge is an about face. |
